Expertise in the European Metropolitan Region of Nuremberg:

Nuremberg and the Metropolitan Region show their economic and technological strengths best in seven areas of competence with above-average growth potential. The extensive expertise in these fields has been pooled in four future areas of activity (“Digital Health Economy”, “Smart Mobility”, “Sustainable Energy Systems” and “Connected Production”) in order to spur cross-cluster innovations for future challenges, both social and technological. One of the major innovation drivers is Nuremberg´s excellent IT and ICT industry.

As meetings follow expertise, Nuremberg hosts numerous leading trade fairs and congresses every year, as fits its profile. In 2019, the European medical technology sector is preparing for the premiere of the new trade show event MedtecLIVE together with MedTech Summit Congress & Partnering. The first edition of MedtecLIVE is taking place from May 21 to 23, 2019 at the NürnbergMesse.

International market leaders, seasoned suppliers and an exciting range of newcomers will ensure an innovation-oriented mix of exhibitors at MedtecLIVE 2019. About 50 percent of the exhibitors will travel from outside Germany to Nuremberg.

As a combined event with a professional base, MedtecLIVE and MedTech Summit have a strong focus on themes relating to future-oriented Medtech businesses as digitalization, AI, organic materials and cyber security. Two exhibition forums provide an opportunity for discussion and the highly regarded MedTech Summit Congress will draw experts in R&D and the application of medical technology to Nuremberg. The congress will offer some 55 presentations and workshops at the cutting edge of medicine and new technologies.

Field of activity

Germany´s very first train was located here and today the city operates RUBIN, the world´s first driverless and fully automated mixed-service subway. Global market leaders for wire and cable systems and automotive engineering are based in the region.

The area of activity benefits largely from the intensive, interlinked network of companies, universities and R&D institutions and their broad expertise combining six areas of competence. The location is well-respected for its state-of-the-art solutions for smart mobility, especially in drive engineering, vehicle electronics and drive electrification. The scientific work focuses on hybrid drive systems, environmentally friendly logistics, smart networks, automated driving and age-based mobility.

One of the latest successes is the award-winning smart city logistics project with e-cargo bikes by Georg Simon Ohm University of Applied Sciences Nuremberg.

Field of activity

Being internationally renowned as a center of excellence, the region is Germany´s only leading-edge cluster for medical technology, a Bavarian “Medical Valley”. It files one-third of all German patent applications in medicine and diagnostics and leads the way in technologies used in imaging diagnostics, smart sensors, therapy systems, ophthalmology and healthcare IT. Combined with the expertise of four other areas of competence, the scientific work is focused on technologies for data analysis and diagnostics, VR as a tool for remote procedures and therapies and AI.

Since 2017, the region is one out of twelve Digital Hubs recognized by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and therefore a model region for digital health. “Moio”, a smart care patch, is just one of the many success stories made in the Medical Valley.

The city´s manufacturing industry contributes highly to the region´s economic success, employing more than 15 % of the local workforce. Combined with the excellent expertise in information and communication technologies, the region is ideally positioned for shaping the future of Industry 4.0. The knowledge in every individual area of competence spurs strong interdisciplinary approaches for IT security, efficient production technologies, human-machine co-operation, inter & intralogistics and personalized and digital production.

The academic landscape leads cutting-edge research when it comes to networked digital production. The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS is a key player. In their Test and Applications Center L.I.N.K., companies can test specific applications in different key technologies of localization, identification, navigation and embedded communication.

Field of activity

For example, 35 % of the wind energy plants installed worldwide each year are operated with power electronics developed in Nuremberg. In 2014, the heat store of Nuremberg´s local energy provider set a new standard in heat storage as one of the tallest and most modern in Europe.
Around 14,000 businesses, mostly small and medium-sized, cover the entire value-added chain from energy production, to conversion, storage and distribution and efficient use. The corporate and R&D landscape is specialized in energy and environmental technology, power electronics, automation and energy-efficient buildings. The energy-research community in the city and region is known for their excellence and practice-orientated solutions. The Energie Campus Nürnberg (EnCN) - a model renowned nationwide for efficient, interdisciplinary collaboration between research institutions, universities and companies - is just one of the many outstanding initiatives in Nuremberg.

The region leads the way in technologies used in imaging diagnostics, smart sensors, therapy systems, ophthalmology and healthcare IT and was named the only national leading-edge cluster for medical technology in early 2010 by the German Government. As a center of excellence in medicine and health, the region has gained the epithet of a Bavarian “Medical Valley”. Since 2017 the region is entitled Digital Health Hub Nuremberg / Erlangen, as part of the Digital Hub Initiative developed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
